Bad breath (Halitosis) is a very common problem, everyone experiences it from time to time!

Despite this, it is still a very sensitive issue and many people hesitate to bring it up with us at their visits because of anxiety or embarrassment. We thought we would put together some information to help you learn a little bit more about the causes of bad breath and learn some strategies to prevent and/or treat it.

The medical term for bad breath is halitosis. Because it is such a common issue, there are many different products like mouth rinses, gum, and mints which are advertised to eliminate bad breath. However, these types of solutions only temporarily cover up the problem and don’t address the cause.

Causes

Common causes to be aware of:

  • Poor oral hygiene

  • Tonsil stones (tonsilloliths)

  • Smoking, Cannabis and chewing tobacco users

  • Foods

  • Sinus infections

  • Chronic dry mouth

  • Abscessed tooth, gum disease, tooth decay and other oral infections

Less frequent causes:

  • Other medical conditions

  • Foreign bodies in the nose

  • Reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease)

  • Recent course of systemic antibiotics

Tips to keep your breath smelling fresh

Brush and floss your teeth a minimum of twice daily

Brush your tongue twice daily

Consider adding a Waterpik to your oral hygiene routine

Drink plenty of water each day (8 glasses minimum) and eat a healthy well-balanced diet

Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake
