In this video Dr. Graas discusses crowns – a very common dental procedure that many people have misconceptions about. One of the biggest worries people have when we recommend a crown is that we will grind their tooth down to a stub – this is not the case! The more tooth we can preserve, the longer the crown will last. Newer materials have allowed us to be more conservative with what we have to take away from a tooth, so the procedure has fewer risks than in the past.
There are several different types of crowns (gold or porcelain), and different reasons why they might be recommended for you. A crown is usually indicated when a tooth has a very large filling, or a crack, in order to protect it from breaking.
